Petition #11485706

Abstract

William Ledbetter of Rutherford County and Hardin P. Bostick of Davidson County seek tax relief. They represent that they employed at their Stewart County iron works about seventy slaves in 1856 "for which they paid taxes due for that year." They submit, however, that the assessor used the same list in 1857 but said slaves were in fact hired "only for the year 1856" and had since December 1856 "been in the possession of their respective owners & your petitioners presume have been regularly taxed as the property of said owners." They therefore "respectfully ask for relief from said unjust tax thus charged against them."

Result: Referred to judiciary committee.
