Seventy-two citizens of Jefferson County ask that William and Abner Ashworth, free persons of color, be permitted to remain in the Republic. The petitioners strongly believe that "an act relating to free persons of color passed at the last session of your Hon body will ... operate oppressively and grievously upon them the said Ashworths by forceing them from the Country whose battles they have fought and whose independence they assisted in achieving." They therefore pray that an act be passed "for their relief."
