Petition #11584802

Abstract

Henry Gibson represents that his slave "was publicly executed by the Sheriff of this county to meet the reasonable demands of justice." Of the opinion that he should be compensated for the loss of his property, Gibson points out that "it has been the custom for years in the neighboring Slave States to pay the owner of Slaves of which they were deprived either one half or the whole value of the same," noting that "Georgia pays the Value, Alabama $500 Miss $300 & Louisiana $300." Gibson states "that inasmuch as all are benefitted by such a sacrifice he can see no good reason why all should not share in the loss and respectfully asks such relief as your Honorable body may seem proper and equitable."
