Forty-nine residents of Tyler County recommend that free man of color Moses Bryant be permitted to remain in the state "under such restrictions as you may see proper." They explain that Bryant followed his slave wife from Mississippi to Texas when his wife's owner, petitioner William Harrison, migrated. The petitioners view Bryant to be "a peacable orderly man & further he is able and willing to give good Security for his good behavior."
