Petition #11585901

Abstract

Joseph Dougharty informs the legislature that "a negro woman named Lucy, a slave for life and the property of your memorialist" was found guilty of murdering Maria Dougharty and "was sentenced to be hung, which Sentence was carried into execution by the Sheriff of said County on the 5th day of March 1858, whereby your memorialist has lost the services of said Slave and her value as his property and is entitled to compensation under the law." Dougharty cites, however, that "the verdict of the jury did not entirely conform to the requirements of law, as it did not state the value of said slave." He therefore prays "for an appropriation of the whole or such part of the value of said slave as may seem just, and shews that such value is the sum of four Hundred and Sixty dollars."
