Charles Sayer represents that, in December 1775, his slave named Africa was captured in the service of Lord Dunmore by a group of patriots and taken to Williamsburg and afterwards ordered by the Committee of Safety to the lead mines. Averring that he "doth now stand in great need of the said Slave," Sayer asks that Africa be ordered "to be returned to him, together with his Hire from the Time he has been employed in the Service of the Country."
