William Fitzhugh writes that on 2 January 1805, there was a "general insurrection of the Slaves" on his plantation called Chatham in Stafford County. One of his slaves, Philip, was killed and another, James, drowned while attempting to swim across the Rappahannock River. Fitzhugh asks for compensation.
