Petition #11680910

Abstract

Thomas Johnson Jr.'s father, a resident of Maryland, has recently died, having bequeathed to Thomas a moiety of his lands and mills in Loudoun County along the Potomac River as well as a forge and lands across the river in Frederick County, Maryland. Thomas also owns other slaves in Maryland, which had been given to him by his father during his lifetime, as well as slaves he received through his marriage to a Maryland woman. Thomas Johnson now seeks authorization from the Virginia legislature to transport his slaves back and forth between his properties in both states. It would be "to the Interest and greatly to the Accomodation of your Petitioner," he said, "notwithstanding the general legal prohibitions or Restrictions," if he were permitted to "remove and employ some of the said slaves--from the one to the other of the said places," on the condition "that those which may be brought from Maryland shall not be sold in Virginia or under such Restrictions as may be thought prudent to prevent Abuse."
