In 1814, Moses Ball of Lee County, Virginia, loaned Tidings Lane of Claiborne County, Tennessee, $1310, securing the loan by mortgaging six slaves. It was agreed that if the loan was not repaid within twelve months, Ball would acquire title to the slaves. More than twelve months have elapsed and Lane has defaulted on the loan and left for "some unknown Land." Ball has become the owner of the slaves and claims that he has been under "great inconvenience & Considerable expense" because the law prevents him to bring his new property and "& their increase" into Virginia. He seeks permission to do so.
