Petition #11681807

Abstract

John B. Richeson, the executor of Edmund Littlepage's last will and testament, asks that Sophia and her mulatto daughter, Lucy, age twelve, be emancipated and permitted to remain in Virginia. According to the late Littlepage Sophia and Lucy were not to be freed until Lucy was twelve, an age she has now reached. Littlepage not only provided for Sophia's and Lucy's freedom, but he also "amply provided" for their maintenance and Lucy's education. The deceased owner was rewarding Sophia, age about forty, for her "faithful services and integrity." Realizing they had not performed "meritorious service," the executor approaches the legislature rather than the county court with his request.
