Petition #11682304

Abstract

Elvira Jones represents that "by reason of the kindness and indulgence of the Master to whom she then belonged opportunities have been afforded her of applying to her own advantage portions of her time and labor, and by the same means of becoming possessed of some small pecuniary resources." With her savings, Elvira has purchased herself and her two children--Julia Ann and William. She also has purchased a house in the suburbs. Now she confronts a fate worse than slavery itself, she says, being compelled to leave Virginia. "Tis with anxious and trembling forebodings then that Your Petitioner presents herself before the Legislature, to supplicate of their liberality and clemency, permission to her and children to live and die in the Land of their nativity." She prays for an act of the legislature permitting her and her children to remain in Virginia.
