One hundred fifty-one relatives of the late Jacob Warwick, a number of them legatees to his estate, petition to ask that Ben, a free man of color, and his daughter, Taymer, be authorized to remain in Virginia. Ben, who is about fifty-three years old, was the faithful, grey-haired servant of Jacob Warwick. By his last will and testament, Warwick emancipated him and Taymer. The petitioners attest that Ben's character is sterling, and on one occasion he saved his owner's life. The petitioners ask that the legislature pass an act authorizing him and Taymer to remain "where (if necessary) the undersigned may be enabled to afford him and his daughter" protection. A related petition filed by Ben asking to be allowed to remain in the state reveals that Taymer was seven years of age.
