Petition #11682609

Abstract

Hanah, a woman of color, represents to the legislature that she was purchased from her owner, Evan Thompson, by her father, a free man of color named Will. Her father has now set her free. But she has a husband named Jim who is the slave of one Henry Jones, whom she married before she was free and from whom she does not want to be separated. She appeals to "the humanity of the Legislature," praying that they will pass an act authorizing her to remain in "the land of her birth, and in the society of her husband."

Result: Rejected.
