Petition #11682709

Abstract

Llwellyn Jones, the petitioner, is the administrator of the estate of the late John Hamlin who was murdered by some of his slaves. Of the nine slaves captured, Jones informs the legislature, seven were executed and two were "transported" out of state. The conspirators were all laborers, he says, and now the farm is left with "a parcel of unprofitable slaves, consisting chiefly of women, children and infirm persons." In addition, great resentment exists in the neighborhood, which means that the safety of the remaining blacks cannot be assured. Furthermore, hiring them out would yield little profit. Jones asks for permission to sell the slaves in a distant market, where they will presumably command a higher price, to support the orphans of the deceased.
