Ephriam Cary and his wife Betsey petition to be allowed to remain in the state of Virginia. Ephriam represents that he is a native of the county of Charles City and was the slave of "His Excellency" John Tyler from the time of his birth until the latter's death. Upon Tyler's death, he was sold "for no fault of his" and was purchased by one John Lewis, who in 1831 freed him and Betsey. Ephriam and Betsey have no children and no prospect of ever having any. They have acquired "by their honest industry" and "prudent management" some property that "with care will maintain them through life, aided in some degree by their labor."
