Forty-two residents of Accomack County ask that Solomon, a free man of color, be permitted to remain in Virginia. They report that the late Elizabeth Wharton died about six years ago, "leaving her negroes free, among whom was a certain slave named Solomon." The petitioners attest that Solomon "is a man of good habits and of correct deportment and a useful citizen." They further report that he has a wife and several children and "that his services as a gardener and day labourer are much required in his neighbourhood." The petitioners therefore pray that a law be passed "authorizing the said Solomon to remain in the said county during his good behaviour."
