Petition #11683830

Abstract

Eleven citizens of Warren protest "against the petition of Edward and others, requesting permission of the Legislature to remain in this commonwealth, and to reside in the county aforesaid." Averring that they "have experienced so much annoyance from the neighborhood of free blacks," the petitioners firmly espouse that "Negroes, Bond and Free, cannot exist in the same society without danger and loss to Masters" and "this danger can only be averted by relieving ourselves of the presence of the free." They further point out that "an easy and safe method of so doing" exists in the "design of the Colonization Society -- viz the peaceable removal of the emancipated to a comfortable assylum, much more congenial to their natures, and much more to their advantage in all respects, than any residence in this country can ever be." The petitioners, “without desiring to enter into the merits of Edward and others,” therefore pray “you to disregard the petition of the said Edward and others and reject the same – thus affording protection to this county against the host of idle and vicious persons of the free negro class who only await the successful issue of the petition of Edward to present their claims to the same privileges and immunities at your hands.”
