Two sailors stabbed and murdered Simon Abrahams's "likely and valuable young negro" man Frank. Abrahams petitions the legislature for compensation, arguing that although the state does not grant compensation in such cases it should. Why should a master be reimbursed for the value of a slave who commits a murder and is hanged, Abrahams asks, and not be reimbursed when an innocent man is murdered?
