Amy Beasly, a fifty-eight-year-old free woman of color, represents that she "was for more than forty years the property of the late Adam Johnston ... who devised her to his son Edward Johnston, who subsequently sold her to Thomas Beasly a free man of Colour, who has recently emancipated her." She states that she is the mother of eleven children, "all of whom belong to the heirs & representatives of said Adam Johnston." The petitioner, "who is very infirm & desirous to spend the remnant of her days, among her children," therefore prays "that your Honorable body pass a law authorising & permitting your petitioner to remain in the Commonwealth."
