Petition #11684504

Abstract

Joseph Beacham represents that he was called before the Grand Jury to give evidence "against a certain Samuel A. M. Leland, administrator of Baldwin M. Leland, for permitting a certain slave, Priscilla, the property of his intestate, to go at large, against the act of the General Assembly"; in the trial, the jury found for the defendant. Beacham asserts that the "Attorney for the Commonwealth" inadvertently, "or perhaps in ignorance of the fact," identified him as the "prosecutor," whereupon he was ordered to pay the defendant's costs. The petitioner reports that he posted bond and put up a yoke of oxen as security. Noting that the loss of said animals would be a "very great inconvenience and loss, both in securing his crop of that year, not then gathered, and in getting fuel for his family during the winter," the petitioner therefore prays that the state pay the sum of $13.38, including interest from 1836, when the case was tried.
