Forty-three Albermarle County residents oppose the petition of James Monroe, a former slave, who asked the legislature permission to remain in Virginia. Monroe, they contend, has "no individual merit in his claim." Moreover, the petitioners write, "we are now endeavouring to get rid of the free colored population in our county."
Result: Referred to committee for courts of justice.
