Petition #11686004

Abstract

William Lett represents that the Nelson County Court of Quarter Sessions convicted his slave named Tom of a felony on 27 July 1858 and sentenced him to be hanged; Tom's sentence, however, "was commuted to transportation being nothing more than put to labour on the Publick works of Va." Confirming that the court allowed him $1080 for the said Tom, Lett argues that this "was not a fair valuation of said slave," as he had "paid $1275 for said slave, only a short time previous to his conviction, and considered him cheap at that price." The petitioner therefore prays that he be given "the true additional value of the said slave Tom."

Result: Referred to claims committee.
