Petition #21680406

Abstract

Richmond Sampson, a free man of color, seeks to free his wife Fanny, a slave formerly owned by the late Daniel Ivey. Sampson asserts that Ivey had promised to manumit Fanny, but "unfortunately for your orator and his wife the said Ivey departed this life intestate, before he had performed the humane and honorable intention aforesaid and no deed of emancipation was signed." The petitioner now laments that the administrator of Ivey's estate "claimed and took possession of the wife of your orator as a slave, and had her inventoried as a part of the said Daniel's estate, and on a division of the estate, the said Fanny was allotted & delivered" to Hugh Ivey, one of the distributees. Citing that these actions "tend to the great wrong misery and oppression of your orator," Sampson prays "that the said Fanny be duly & legally emancipated" and that "Hugh be compelled to restore her to her husband."
