Petition #20979902
- Anne Arundel County, Maryland. March 28, 1799. - September 24, 1805.
- Court: Chancery
- Salutation: To the Honorable Alexander Contee Hansson Esquire Chancellor of Maryland
Abstract
Mary Scrivener, administratrix of John Scrivener's estate, distributed two slave women, Grace and Hagar, to her son William. After the distribution, Hagar had a daughter, Meriah. William then received a slave man, Tim, in the settlement of his brother Richard's estate. Francis Scrivener was named administrator of his mother Mary's estate in 1792 and allotted two unidentified slaves to his brother William but retained them in his possession. Now Joseph Camden, administrator of William's estate, charges that Francis, recently deceased, took "advantage of his brothers weakness and Imbecillity of mind, kept him in an out House, clothed fed and worked him as a negro, and with his negroes." Camden prays for a writ of subpoena against Francis's executors to answer questions about William's property. Camden requests a proper distribution of the estates and all other proper relief.
Result: Partially granted; dismissed; appealed; reversed and remanded; granted.
