Petition #20184517

Abstract

Seeking to buy several slaves, Walker Reynolds met with slave owner John J. Woodward and the trustee of his estate, William W. Knox, in order to come to an agreement about the price he would be willing to pay for what they had to offer at an upcoming auction. On the list submitted to Reynolds by Woodward and Knox were two slaves: an "old" man of between forty and fifty years of age named Governor and a man of thirty named Dave. Reynolds describes Dave as "large and likely," and a "good wagoner and a tolerable rough carpenter." On the list were also members of Dave's family, including several young girls. According to Reynolds, it made it clear to Woodward and Knox that he did no wish to purchase Governor "at any price and that he was older than he wished to purchase," but that he was interested in Dave and his family. Some time later, at the auction, Reynolds purchased one of Dave's daughter and, thinking that he was bidding for Dave as well, mistakenly purchased Governor. When he discovered his error, Reynolds tried to get out of the sale, but Woodward and Reynolds sued. He now attempts to have the sale cancelled.

Result: Dismissed.
