Petition #20184603

Abstract

Joseph Savery claims that he and Solomon Spence "became and still continued to be jointly and equally interested" in the purchase of six slaves, a woman named Caroline and her five children: Henry, Bill, Melessa, Cecely, and Laura. Spence holds the bill of sale to the slaves, but Savery has them in his possession, except Henry who remained with Spence until recently, when he was sent to Mississippi or Arkansas. The services of Henry are "very valuable," Savery says, and Spence kept "the entire profits or wages arising from his labor." Savery kept Caroline and the four other children, complaining that he bore "the entire expense of feeding, clothing, and providing the necessary medical and other attendance for them when Sick." Now the sheriff has seized the slaves to pay Spence's debts, and Savery asks for his share of the proceeds from the sale.

Result: Dismissed.
