Abstract
In his will, written in 1844, Robert Hamlet left his daughter, Sarah Johnson, a life estate in four slaves: Jim, Toby, Jully, and Ann. Ann was to remain with Hamlet's wife until her death, and then transfer to his daughter. Two years later, Hamlet died. Now Sarah explains that her husband, Alexander Johnson, a merchant, is heavily in debt and has "no property or means." She seeks to put her inheritance in a separate estate for her sole and exclusive use.
