Petition #20184609

Abstract

In a previous petition, Elizabeth Humphreyville asked for a divorce from Joseph D. Humphreyville, whom she describes as cruelly abusive, a "very unthrifty shiftless man who can hardly support himself." Elizabeth runs a boarding house in the city of Mobile, requiring that she make contracts, purchase provisions, hire servants and otherwise dispose of earnings. She explains that by her own industry, she acquired two black women. Now her husband has abandoned her and left the city taking one of the slaves with him. Elizabeth asks that her "earnings & accumulations the result of her labor & industry may be secured to her sole & separate use." In a related testimony, we learn that one of her slaves ran away, but the witness does not specify the name of the slave.
