In 1827, Harriet L. Linder married Daniel L. Johnston, who, she contends, "although well able to work & to support his family, has added nothing to their support." Indeed, over the years, David squandered much of what she earned, and has now has abandoned the family. With five children to support, she purchased a slave woman and her three small children, using funds from the sale of land bequeathed to her by her father. Fearful that she might lose this small estate if she remains married, Harriet Johnston files for divorce.
