Petition #20184910

Abstract

In 1819, Nancy Renwick of Newberry District, South Carolina, loaned her daughter "a negro woman named Sarah, otherwise called Sally, & her two children, named Spencer about two years old & Young a boy about nine months old," together with their future increase. The daughter, Leah Michau, was to keep the slaves free from the control of her husband. In subsequent years, Sarah gave birth to a number of other children, including, Ann and Dick, the latter a boy about 23 years old. In turn, Ann has given birth to Richard. In 1843, Thomas Williams of Benton County, and James H. Michau, Leah's son, took Young, Dick, Ann, and "issue then born," and sold them to William Wyatt of Perry County. Of the slaves, Leah confesses that she "has raised them and is attached to them; they have been the companions and playmates of her children." She petitions the court for their return and for such "further relief in the premises as to Equity belongs, and to your Honor may Seem meet & proper."
