Petition #20185005

Abstract

In February 1848, during an argument, Hester Ann Nelins, wife of Gasper Nelins of Mobile, went into a violent and drunken rage, throwing household furniture, slashing a harness, and vowing to shoot her husband. She left their residence, and remained away for five months. In July 1848, however, she returned "Sick and unprovided for." Gasper, his servants, and a physician nursed her back to health, but in November 1850, he discovered her having sexual intercourse with Francis Lawrence, an employee who lived on their property. When confronted, she said "she could do as she pleased." A week later, he heard them in Lawrence's private room, and believed they were "again in adultery." The next Saturday evening, while Gasper was at the market, Hester Ann stole $150 -- all the money in the house -- and eloped with her lover. The two left the state. Nelins seeks a divorce.
