Married in 1839, Dionytia Bondurant now sues for divorce on the grounds of abandonment. On 1 January 1849 her husband "voluntarily abandoned the bed and board & society of your Oratrix and for three years next preceding, the filing of this Bill, and went to the state of California then a province or territory of the United states." Meanwhile, she had supported and educated her two children, Alice, age nine, and Frank, age six, by hiring out "negroes which have been heretofore settled upon her & them" and through her own "industry and economy."
Result: Granted.
