Petition #20185323

Abstract

Joseph Hopper, the guardian of a minor named Caroline Elsberry, petitions for authorization to sell his ward's "Negro property" and let the money out "at Interest." Hopper argues that "it will be seen that the man Jerry will be about valuless when the ward becomes of age." In addition, Hopper notes, "the woman Silvia is badly troubled with the falling of the womb & has lost two children" and "one of the children of the woman Big Mary is badly deformed." Hopper does not wish "to turn that Kind of property over to his ward when she becomes of age." Instead, he believes that it would be "to the interest of said minor to have them sold at the present high rate of Negro property."
