John O. Cummins, guardian of James Manning, minor, asks to sell slaves belonging to his ward for the purpose of education and maintenance. A related document reveals that the two slaves mentioned by Cummins as belonging to his ward, namely Turner and Beckus, actually belonged to one of his siblings, Ada; James Manning was in fact the owner of three other slaves named Barney, Kizzy and Bartley. In a related petition, John Cummins correctly identifies the last three slaves as belonging to James; he provides the ages of Barney, Kizzy and Bartley (erroneously named Barney) as being thirty-eight, thirty-seven, and sixteen, respectively; they are described as being of dark complexion. The ages of two other slaves, Henry and Harriet, belonging to another of James Manning's siblings, John, are provided in another related petition.
