Petition #20185924

Abstract

Benjamin M. Woolsey, administrator of the estate of Calvin Norris, deceased, asks for permission to keep Norris's plantation running. In an earlier petition, Woolsey informed the court that the estate consisted of four hundred acres of land and one hundred and four slaves. "[M]any of the negroes belonging to said estate are children, too young to be hired out," he asserts, and "some of said negroes are old and only serviceable as nurses of the younger children." Therefore, for the benefit of the minor heirs, Woolsey seeks authorization to keep the estate together and cultivate the land for a period of one year ending 1 January 1861.
