Petition #20186030

Abstract

In 1818, Mary Pridgeon received from Led Mobley a slave--by a deed of gift--to possess "during her natural life & at her death to descend equally to her children." It was the "negro Girl named Milly from whom the entire Stock has Since Sprung," Sina Collins, a daughter, explains in 1860 in a suit against her brother, John G. Pridgeon, and brother-in-law, Joshua Hart. Milly's offspring, a daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren, are now ten in number. Sina Collins informs the court that the slaves are in the possession of John Pridgeon and Joshua Hart and that the two men refuse to give them up. She charges that they "fraudulently and concealed or destroyed said Deed of Gift," which would show that she has a right to a share in her mother's estate. Believing they plan to take the slaves "beyond the limits" of Alabama, Sina seeks an injunction forbidding the exportation of the slaves. She also asks for "such other & further relief as your Honor may seem meet."

Result: Dismissed.
