Emily F. Slater wishes to supplement her earlier petition in which she asked for a divorce from her husband James Slater on the charges of adultery, cruelty, and abandonment. Emily now laments that James has forcibly taken five-year-old Kate away and "has wholly deprived your petitioner in this way of all control over or access to her said child, notwithstanding little Katy cries." The petitioner charges that her husband took said child "for the purpose of bringing grief and distress upon her and enforcing terms upon her in relation to these pending suits and her property." She particularly notes that "since he has taken the child he has made a proposition for your petitioner to give up her slaves, and already had some papers drawn up to which he has demanded her signature, signing away her right to said slaves." Emily therefore prays that the James be ordered “to return to her her said child” and “to pay over to her for the support and maintenance of herself and child Two Hundred and fifty Dollars per month.”
