Petition #20186405

Abstract

Mary E. Cato charges that her husband, D. M. Cato, abandoned her and left her destitute. She is "without house or home, and without property or means of any Kind, and compelled to live, as best she can, among her neighbors and upon the charity of her friends." She asserts that her husband owns "in his own right, many negro slaves, and other property ... worth more than twenty thousand dollars." She therefore requests that he “be required immediately to furnish oratrix, with a certain amount of money to be determined by your Honor to assist her in the conduct of this suit, and for her past, and immediate support and necessities." Cato also asks that "an account may be taken of the Estate of the defendant, and a proper sum be set apart for her alimony."
