Esther, a woman of color, states that she and her child, Phillip, are being held in the county jail as the slaves of John Cavey, "her pretended Master," where she "is now in a Suffering condition with her Child Liable to contagious diseases." Apprehending that "She is Legally entitled to her Liberty, as also her Child," Esther asks the court for "Such order in the premises as may be consistant with the Laws of this State."
