Petition #20380323

Abstract

Robert Hamilton, administrator of the estate of the late Daniel J. Adams, states that Adams was the "Sole owner of a certain negro man named David Peters," a runaway. He further charges that Peters was jailed and "Tried for stealing a Cow, convicted and whipped publicly at Newcastle for the same;" Peters, however, "in company with three others broke Jail and made his escape." With the slave caught and now back in the New Castle jail, Hamilton laments that he is unable to sell him in the neighborhood because of his "notorious character." He therefore asks to "Export, Sell, Carry out of the State for Sale, the said negro."
