Seventeen-year-old Maria Day is "now in the Public Jail for New Castle County." Day states that she "belonged to a Mr. Jonathan Justus of the State of Maryland that your Petitioner was Manumitted by her said master to be free at the age of Eighteen." She further cites that her father "afterwards purchased the time of your Petitioner and brought her into this State" and bound her "as an Indented servant to Miss Ann Bail." Day asserts that Bail "has not complied with any of the covenants mentioned in the said Indenture" and that she "has been very badly beatten by her said mistress." She believes Bail "is now about to sell her out of Jail for the Term of three years, which your Petitioner alleges is a much longer time than she ought to serve." Day therefore prays that Bail be summoned "to answer Such Complaints as your Petitioner shall make against her."
