On 20 April 1813, free black Caleb Williams apprenticed his eight-year-old-son William to William F. Corbit for thirteen years "to learn the art, and trade of waiting, attending, farming, &c." The said Caleb Williams died a few weeks later. Ruth Williams charges that Corbit "transferred the said William Williams as a servant, to a certain William Vandegrift of the said County, in whose custody he is now illegally detained." She now asks that Vandegrift, "the pretended master of the said minor," be summoned "to answer the complaint of your petitioner" and that her son may be discharged from his said indenture.
