Stephen Hall, a free man of color, asks to be sold for a term of servitude to pay "for a fine and fees for Committing an Assault and Battery on Catharine Smith free mulatto." Hall informs the court that he has been in jail for over three months, and "he is unable to pay said fine and fees, in any other way than by servitude."
