In 1821, Jacob Blackiston was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to be sold for seven years to satisfy costs of the indictment and trial. Purchased by Abel Harris, Blackiston escaped with his wife, one of Harris's slaves, but was soon captured. Blackiston bitterly refuses to remain in his service, Harris explains, and threatens to kill the justices of the peace who sentenced him. Harris asks for permission to sell Blackiston out of the state.
