In 1834, free black Perry More apprenticed his son, David More, to Rhodes Hazzard for thirteen years and three months. Hazzard transferred the apprenticeship later to Isaac Obier. When David is convicted of theft and sentenced to be publicly whipped and ordered to pay restitution, Obier offers to pay the judgment of $24.45. He therefore asks that David More be ordered "to serve your petitioner, his master, after the expiration of the original term of his apprenticeship for such further time as the Court Shall deem sufficient to compensate your petitioner, his master, for satisfying Said judgment."
