Petition #20482208

Abstract

Elias Caldwell purchased the slave Charles from George St. Clair, assured "that said negro man was an excellent farmer, faithful, honest & sober" and that he could return Charles to St. Clair within a year and receive a refund. Caldwell maintains that St. Clair supported such an agreement as "it would prevent the negro man's being sent to Kentucky." Now Caldwell charges that St. Clair misrepresented the value of Charles "for the purpose of deceiving & defrauding your orator." He says that Charles is "dishonest & given to intoxication." Caldwell seeks reimbursement of the purchase price and "such other damages for not complying with said agreement."
