Beale, a free man of color, claims that his wife Peggy and their children were taken away from his home by Edward or George Calvert, after the Calverts had given Peggy to Beale. Beale has supported his family through his own labor for years. He currently has pending "a suit defending in the behalf of your Orator, and for the benefit of his family against the said defendants . . . but that your Orator being ignorant, friendless & oppressed, does not know and cannot learn the precise object of the said suit." The Calverts have since imprisoned Beale's wife and children with the intention of selling them. Beale seeks an injunction preventing the Calverts from removing his wife and children from the District of Columbia.
