Petition #20483202

Abstract

Joseph Daley seeks to settle a dispute with Samuel White regarding the ownership of a slave named John. John, now sixteen years of age, was "born in the family" of Daley, who planned to manumit him at an appropriate time. Daley claims that "he hath been at the sole expence of maintaining and bringing him up." In addition to the ordinary expenses of raising John, Daley provided additional assistance when John was "accidentally run over by a waggon." White recently claimed John as his slave, confined him to jail, and is now preparing to sell him. Daley seeks confirmation of his title to John or compensation for the expenses of maintaining him before White issued his claim. He also asks for an injunction to prevent White from selling John out of the court's jurisdiction and an injunction against James Williams, jailer, from delivering John to White.
