Petition #20483518

Abstract

In 1832, Lucy Rollins bound her son, Andrew Rollins, as an apprentice to Philip Ennis until Andrew should become 21 years of age. On 13 May 1835, Andrew was "struck on the head" by Philip Ennis' brother, "with a narrow tail-board of a cart." Since the only witnesses were members of the Ennis family, Andrew decided not to take action against the offender; instead he left. On 22 May, Philip Ennis took Andrew from the city to a more deserted area where he tied him to a post and beat him. Witnesses asked Ennis to stop, but he continued beating Andrew "over the boy's head & face, till knots were raised on the head & blood flowed from the nose & mouth." Ennis then took the boy to a brook, washed the blood off of him and sent him to jail. Lucy Rollins states that "Philip Ennis & Andrew Rollins cannot well be mutually beneficial one to the other, after what his transpired" and she asks that the indenture be dissolved.
