Abstract
Horace Gales, a free man of color, asserts that he is being illegally held in bondage as an apprentice by Peter Hewitt. He complains that Hewitt "falsely gives out that your petitioner is bound to him as an apprentice, for a term yet unexpired, and refuses to discharge your petitioner from his service." Gales seeks a writ of habeas corpus and to be released from Hewitt.
